JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Dental Assistant/Office Coordinator performs a high level of oversight for the activities of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health.
This position is responsible for staff in two clinical sites, coordinating work activities, and monitoring outcomes.
This position is for a clinically experienced dental assistant to move into an administrative role that influences the education of future dentists and pediatric dentists.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages the day-to-day activity of the graduate and predoctoral pediatric dentistry programs.
Monitors and documents the progress of graduate and predoctoral trainees toward competency and program completion.
Performs functions of a dental assistant or dental hygienist.
Provides input on the management of patient care.
Provides substantial work direction to lower-level staff and participates in the hiring, training, performance review process, and disciplinary process.
Consults, advises, and provides guidance to staff, students, and faculty.
Manages and documents graduate student compliance with GME requirements.
Provides front-line customer service, greets visitors, answers phones, responds to email inquiries, and distributes mail.
Creates and maintains faculty and staff schedules.
Maintains reports, documentation, and operational or procedural manuals.
Provides support for the academic responsibilities of faculty.
Manages purchases and reimbursements for departmental needs.
Performs other duties assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience in a dental office as a dental assistant or dental hygienist.
Minimum two (2) years of experience at the clinic manager or office manager level.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: A Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) in the State of Tennessee, with certification in radiology and nitrous oxide monitoring is required; OR TN Board of Dentistry License in Dental Hygiene is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of related procedures and systems.
Familiarity with dental insurance coding and billing procedures.
Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite.
Interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community.
Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
Ability to use tact and discretion when dealing with a variety of issues.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings.
